The Hot Toddies - Smell The Mitten (Asian Man Records)

December 28, 2008 – 9:55 pm

The Hot Toddies first came to my attention at the start of December.  I blogged about them over on Indie-mp3 - you can read that post here.

After hearing them back then I ordered their CD on the strength of their My Space songs and over Christmas, ‘Smell The Mitten’ dropped through my letter box.   And it’s everything it promised to be - like a sugar coated mix of early Pipettes, Slow Down Tallahassee and 60s girl groups, 50s doo wop and occasional surf guitars.

As bubblegum pop goes The Hot Toddies are pretty much the perfect band, a little like a poppier version of the recently discovered Baby Shakes - where Baby Shakes play the pop’n'roll thing to perfection - The Hot Toddies just delve straight into the wonderful world of bubblegum pop.  Songs like ‘The Surf Song’,  ‘HTML’ , ‘Seattle’ and ‘Photosynthesis’ are about as much fun you have with just you and your CD player.   I am sure the Hot Toddies don’t want to change the world.  They know they’re a great pop band.   And that is more than enough for me.   Come and join the fun and er, Smell The Mitten.
