The Jelas

January 2, 2009 – 9:21 pm

The Jelas make spiky, awkward guitar music.  I’d go as far to say it’s POP music but we can have that discussion another day.

Hailing from Bristol (and surrounding area) - this three piece have been together since the summer of 2007 - describing their musical efforts  thus far : “We try to write twisted, crushed fun songs”. I’d say they don’t only try this, they succeed rather well.   The songs for streaming on My Space make for awkward but remarkably accessible  listening - with nods to Captain Beefheart,  Big Flame and The Fall - this is music you could dance to, but you’d be throwing some pretty unusual shapes keeping up with the beats and the frayed guitars.   The DIY feel is undeniable but listen beyond this and you will hear some great songs. This is the sort of sound that I hope 2009 will throw to the fore.

I’m all spent out at the moment - but I shall be ordering the bands 7 song EP ‘Blood Smash’  as soon as the next pay day comes around.   Here is a video of their song ‘Brad Gamma’:
