My Teenage Stride - Lesser Demons (Digital Self Release)

January 5, 2009 – 8:48 pm

Another day, another band from Brooklyn, New York.  This time it’s the utterly wonderful My Teenage Stride.

The band has evolved through several revisions on the way to their latest self-released EP, Lesser Demons.  Back in 2003 the band was pretty much the work of one man, Jedediah Smith. It’s on Lesser Demons (download from Emusic) that the band have blossomed into a full on band.  The whole EP has that feel of a band that have got their guitars set to razorblade mode - as sure fire pop hit, follows sure fire pop hit.  The EP merges that in-demand echo filled tune driven New York sound with a 1980s British indie feel - whether it’s the punchy postcard sound of  ‘Theme from Teenage Stride’ or the sub Joy Division doom pop of ‘Skin Lieutenant’ this band know how to knock out a killer tune. This EP is pretty much essential listening.

On a side note - I also downloaded their LP (2007) - ‘Ears Like Golden Bats’ which is also well worth a listen - lacking the razorblade guitars in places - but some cracking songs are to be had here as well.
