Wavves
December 28, 2008 – 2:56 pmCreating a buzz on blogs and forums over the past few weeks have been California’s Wavves. I was tipped
off to their sound back at the start of December . Their self titled début record (released on Woodist) is a riotous noise pop affair. Amazingly in the studio all this fuzz and noise is the work of just one man, Nathan Williams.
The sound that Wavves have unleashed is a little like My Bloody Valentine chewing up the best bits of Sonic Youth (y’know the stuff with actual tunes) in a two-bob recording studio on low rent instruments. There are harmonies and melodies in here somewhere and like all the best bands Wavves know that burying your sound in a cloak of fuzz, distortion and random noise is the best thing you can do with pop music. Occasionally the band give into their art house noise-side and the results are closer to where Flying Saucer Attack were taking guitars in the late 1990’s, but don’t let that put you off as it’s a great place to be and for the most part Wavves are on bang on the money with their noise pop work outs. I have a good feeling about Wavves.
The band have a host of UK dates coming up in February and March:
26 Feb Barden’s Boudoir w/ Crystal Stilts London
27 Feb The Chameleon w/ Pens Nottingham
1 Mar Nice N Sleazy w/ Pens Glasgow
2 Mar Bar Saki w/ Pens Manchester
3 Mar Skala w/ Deerhunter London
4 Mar Buffalo Bar w/ Pens Cardiff
5 Mar Prince Albert w/ Pens Brighton
6 Mar Upset The Rhythm Party w/ Pens! London

One Response to “Wavves”
ooh yeah - I got this in mid-October, have a feeling it was a free download then, I’d near forgotten about it despite being hugely impressed at the time. Sounds like the sorta lo-fi ‘band’ I love seeing live, wonder how he’ll pull it off?. That’s March 5 booked for me.
ah, the one I’ve got is ‘wavves’, there’s another release soon called err ‘wavvves’
