Esiotrot/Foxes! split 7″ (Sounds Experience)
December 28, 2008 – 5:22 pmOne of the next years forthcoming releases (release date not yet confirmed) that has got me excited is this split 7″ single from Esiotrot and Foxes! The always excellent Sounds Experience have been silent for a while and they’ve announced their return with this cracking little 7″ single.
Esiotrot contribute two songs to their side of the 7″. The first is the delightfully poppy ‘Tammy is Lez’ which has a mournful brass leading proceedings and an inviting hook that begs you to shuffle along. The vocals have more than a passing likeness to Darren Hayman, musically, the band are ploughing a more whimsical furrow and their songs wouldn’t be out of place of the great twee pop bastion weePOP! records. ‘Spares’ is another lilting piece of indiepop and does it’s best to convince me that Esiotrot are one of the best kept secrets in the UK’s indiepop scene. Esiotrot are a band comfortable with their sound and they are a band that could make a big splash in 2009 with the twee set.
Foxes! are another band that fit the Sounds Experience ethos perfectly. They have cracking songs that would have been right at home on Track and Field nearly a decade ago. Not that their songs are at all dated or even a homage to things gone by, far from it as Foxes! deliver sophisticated pop music that is as charming as it is catchy and as fresh as anything released on Cloudberry Records in the past 12 months. Taking in influences from Camera Obscura, Grandaddy, The Beach Boys and The Apples in Stereo. ‘Rosie’ is beautiful song that twinkles across the room from your speakers - gentle yet powerful - it packs a musical punch beyond it’s simple construction. The more playful casio enfused pop of ‘It’s Ridiculous, Adam’ follows and it leaves you wanting more. Top Stuff.
